PREREQUISITE : Interest in Drafting and Engineering
GRADE : 9-12

COURSE DESCRIPTION : This course is designed to meet the needs of the first time student in the area of technical drafting and serves as a combination of the Technical Drafting I & II courses. The student will study fundamental principles of drafting using various mechanical instruments, and software drafting tools. Advanced drafting techniques are developed and applied to the production of technical 2D and 3D drawings. Emphasis is placed on laboratory processes that include both manual drafting skills and computer aided drafting (CAD) techniques.

TEXTS: (1) BASIC TECHNICAL DRAWING, 6 TH EDITION, BY SPENCER, DYGDON, AND NOVAK.

(2) AUTOCAD; INVENTOR 10; AND REVIT FUNDAMENTALS AND APPLICATIONS, TED SAUFLEY, ET AL…

 GOALS: The student will be able to;

1. describe the role of technical drafting in industry,
2. identify drafting tools and demonstrate usage and correct procedures with these tools,
3. properly lay out title and produce basic mechanical drawings,
4. identify and employ various forms of lettering,
5. produce free-hand sketches and explain the importance of sketching in industry,
6. identify various geometric shapes and construct them as requested,
7. identify and demonstrate the ability to construct the alphabet of lines used in drafting,
8. demonstrate the ability to read various scales used in drafting,
9. demonstrate the ability to use proper dimensioning techniques,
10. demonstrate the knowledge, understanding, and skill, while using a computer aided drafting (CAD) system, to produce various drawings, and
11. demonstrate the skills needed to work on an independent project assigned by the teacher.

UNITS: Textbook readings and class assignments.

EVALUATION: The final grade for the course will be based on the following assessments:

1. Daily Work/Drawings 40%
2. Chapter Assignments 20%
3. Tests 10%
4. Quizzes 10%
5. Midterm Exam 10%
6. Final Exam 10%
