Welcome to the Science Department Jeff White, Department Head Astronomy : This course will give a comprehensive look at the universe. This will include the Earth and moon, the planets, our sun, the solar system, comets, asteroids, meteors, galaxies, stars, black holes and other oddities of space. We will begin with some history and move through modern times and what is being discovered today. We will study light, time dilation, and formation of the universe. Algebra I skills will be helpful in this course. Grades 11-12. Oceanography: Oceanography is designed to cover the ocean environment. We will explore both the physical ocean (history, waves, water chemistry, topography, geology, ecology, pollution) of the ocean as well as the biological ocean (plants, invertebrates, vertebrates). This is an excellent course for students wishing to pursue a career in the Oceanological sciences or just like the ocean environment. A culminating shark dissection is required. Grades 11-12. Advanced Placement Physics C: This is a college course in mechanics. Students taking this course must have completed a first-year course in physics and students must have completed, or be enrolled concurrently in, calculus. AP Physics C prepares the students to explore a depth in physics and to do well on the AP exam. This course is ideal for students who are planning a major in engineering or other technical field. Students enrolling should have excellent math ability and skills, disciplined work habits, and an interest in science. There is usually one outside project such as the Electric Vehicle or the FIRST Robotics competition. Grades11-12. Advanced Placement Chemistry: This is the equivalent of a first-year college chemistry course. The academic objectives comply with this level. The main objectives are to prepare the students to do well on the AP exam and for college studies. This course is designed for students who are planning to pursue a major in chemistry, pre-medical, pre-pharmacy, or any science related field. However, it will be very beneficial for any major, as it will prepare students for rigorous' college academics. Students signing up for this course should have excellent math ability and skills, disciplined work habits, and an interest in science. Grades 11-12. Advanced Placement Biology: This course is designed to allow students in high school to obtain college credit and/or advanced placement above the introductory level at the college they attend. AP Biology is the equivalent of a college introductory biology course and is ideal for students planning a major in the biological sciences. The two main goals of AP Biology are to help students develop a conceptual framework for modern biology and to help students gain an appreciation of science as a process. If your primary reason for taking this course is a desire to accept and tackle a difficult intellectual challenge, to take a superior science course and/or just to take and "pass" the AP exam, then this course can help you meet these goals. Grades 10-12.
