Mathematics in today’s society is being continually created and adapted to meet the needs of education, citizenship, and careers. These needs make mathematics a cornerstone of opportunity in today’s world. The underlying themes of problem solving, reasoning, and communication that bridge everyday language to mathematical language and provide connections to real life situations are woven throughout the mathematics curriculum. At each level, students are not only expected to become proficient in appropriate computational skills, but also to be actively involved in constructing and applying mathematical ideas. By using physical models, manipulatives, “hands-on” activities, and technology such as computers and calculators, students are participating in concrete experiences that provide them opportunities to solve problems. As students move through these experiences and gain conceptual understanding of mathematical ideas, they move to more advanced levels of abstraction and explore more sophisticated mathematics.

Math Courses:

College Preparatory Classes
: All students intending to graduate with the College Prep Diploma Seal must complete four years of college prep mathematics. Most students will complete Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra 2, Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry for their four-course requirement. Honors and Gifted students typically complete H/G Geometry, H/G Algebra 2, Precalculus, and AP Calculus (either AB or BC). Students seeking a college Prep diploma may also choose to take the Applied Algebra technical class as an elective (not counting as one of the 4 CP classes required for CP diploma) to improve their Algebra skills before taking Algebra II.

The following courses are available to meet the four-year graduation requirement and may be taken as electives:

Non-AP Calculus: Introduction to calculus. Prerequisites: Algebra II minimum; Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry or Precalculus recommended.

AP Statistics: This course follows the AP syllabus developed by the College Board for the Advanced Placement (AP) Statistics Examination. Prerequisites: Algebra II minimum; Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry or Precalculus recommended. This is a yearlong course.

Advanced Placement Calculus AB: Our second highest mathematics course designed to provide college credit for high school students. Taking the AP exam in the spring is a requirement for taking this course. Prerequisites: Precalculus and teacher recommendation. This is a yearlong course.

Advanced Placement Calculus BC: Our highest mathematics course designed to provide college credit for high school students. Taking the AP exam in the spring is a requirement for taking this course. Prerequisites: Precalculus and teacher recommendation. This is a yearlong course.

Technical Preparatory Classes: All students intending to graduate with the Technical Preparatory Diploma Seal must complete three years of mathematics. Most students will complete Concepts of Problem Solving (formerly known as Tech Math I), Concepts of Algebra (formerly known as Tech Math II), and Informal Geometry (formerly known as Tech Math III). All Technical preparatory students are required to pass either Concepts of Problem Solving and Concepts of Algebra or the college prep Algebra I course to meet the state Algebra I minimum requirement.

After completing two math courses, any college preparatory course after Algebra I is sufficient to meet the third year course requirement. In addition, the senior course Mathematical Money Management (MMM) or Applied Algebra will meet the third year requirement. Any mathematics courses completed beyond the three-year requirement are classified as math electives.
