Frequently Asked Questions About SHS Registration

What happens if I don't turn in my registration request form signed and on time? You are jeopardizing your chances of getting the classes you want. School personnel will complete incomplete forms and you will forfeit your opportunity for input. Unsigned forms may cause a delay in receiving your schedule.
Why do I need to take more than the minimum requirements in each academic area? Many colleges expect you to take more than the bare minimum. Also your competition is taking additional classes. It also helps you when you get ready to take the SAT and the ACT.
What program of study is recommended if I am planning to go to college? We suggest that you take at least 4 language arts, 4 math, 4 science, 4 social studies, 3+ foreign language, 2 fine arts, and 2 additional academic core electives. This leaves room for 4 technical courses and another 5 courses of your choice!
What is a dual diploma? To earn a dual diploma you need to complete the requirements for a college prep diploma plus the 4 technical requirements needed for a technical diploma. This program of study will prepare you for school and work!
What should I do so I can make the best elective choices in course requests? Think about what courses you need for the diploma you want to earn. Think about your future goals and interests. Talk to your parents about what fits into your family life (after school requirements). Talk to your friends and teachers to learn more about each course. Make wise choices because they will not be changed.
What is most important when planning for college, taking harder classes or my GPA? Colleges do look more favorably on honors, gifted, and AP classes you attempt and they take that into consideration when looking at your GPA.
Why should I take an Advanced Placement (AP) course? AP courses are taught with a nationally recognized curriculum. Students who earn a 3 or better may earn credit toward college coursework (students should check with the college they are interested in to know what that school's regulations are). An AP course also gives you some very valuable learning experiences to prepare you for college. Remember. . . you want to be as prepared as possible to succeed at whatever you choose to do after graduating from high school.

Can I take a gifted class if I'm not identified "gifted"? Yes, you can request a gifted class and, if there is room, you may be placed there. You will earn credit for an honors class.

Do I need more than 2 units of a foreign language? For a college prep diploma you must have at least 2 units in the same language. However, some colleges require more so it is best to take as many as you can and always check with the college to which you are applying.

When will I know if I got the classes I requested? This information should be ready early summer.

When will I get my schedule? Schedules will be given out at Opening Night, in August.

Can I change my classes if I don't like them? No, a definite decision on class requests must be submitted when you meet face-to-face with the administration in March. Classes are planned and teachers are assigned based on registration requests in the spring. Please plan carefully!
Can I change my schedule if I don't get the teacher I want? No, requests for specific teachers are not considered.
Can I take 2 PE classes at the same time? No. You may take one each term if it fits into your schedule.

Can I be an office aide? You need to have taken the Business Procedures class in order to be an aide. This is only open to 11 th and 12 th grade students.

Can I double up in a subject if I've failed a class I need for graduation? You will register for 1 course in each academic area, math, science, social studies, and language arts. You may put in a request to make-up a course in elective blocks 7 and 8 on your registration form. We cannot guarantee enough room to place repeaters. Seniors will have priority in placement. You should consider summer school if you want to stay on track to graduate.

Can I graduate early? Fifth year seniors may graduate in December if their schedules work out. 4th year seniors whose schedules work out may graduate if (1) they have an agreement with a post-secondary school to start in January (the month after they wish to graduate, (2) they are signed up to join the military in January, or (3) if their family is moving out of state by January.

Does the foreign language or algebra class that I took in middle school count toward my graduation requirements? No. All necessary credits needed to earn a diploma must be taken in high school.

What is a 4-year program of study? It is all the classes you plan to take or have taken that will meet graduation requirements and help prepare you for what you plan to do after graduation.
