Foreign Language Courses:

Two years of the same foreign language are required for the college seal diploma. Levels I and II must be taken in consecutive semesters.

French I-II/German I-II/Spanish I-II: Students learn the basic skills of listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing. Culture of the country will also be explored. Levels I and II of French, German, and Spanish are the first step toward proficiency and the understanding of culture, grammar, and the structure of the 'language. These courses would also be a good choice for a second foreign language for students who have completed the upper levels of a first language.

Latin I-II: These courses will involve translation, vocabulary building, Roman culture and classical mythology. Latin is an alternative choice for students not interested in a spoken foreign language. Latin would also be a good choice for a second foreign language for students who have completed the upper levels of a first language.

French III-IV-V/German III-IV-V /Latin III-IV/Spanish III-IV-V: Many colleges request students to have completed a minimum of three years of the same foreign language. These upper level classes provide students with the opportunity to achieve fluency and are designed for those who are seriously interested in speaking the language and improving other language skills.

AP French/Spanish : Advanced Placement French/Spanish provides an opportunity for high-achieving, motivated students to pursue and receive credit for college-level course work in high school. Pre-requisites are Levels 1, 2, 3 and 4, with teacher recommendation.

Gifted Electives

Gifted Directed Study: Under the supervision of a gifted program teacher, students complete and present an individual research project planned and developed through extensions of the AKS. Curriculum areas available include language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, fine arts, modern and classical languages, and general electives. Students expand their individual interest and creativity while learning to develop adult behavior such as self-motivation, planning, prioritizing, and task completion. Grades 11-12. Interested Students should apply through the Gifted Program Contact Teacher.

Gifted Internship (QUEST): The QUEST internship program enables gifted juniors and seniors to spend part of the school day in an in-depth career exploration with a mentor in the community. As interns, students gain specific knowledge of a career as they experience the actual day-to-day routine. Students spend a minimum of 6 hours per week for approximately 15 weeks in the unpaid internship; the remaining weeks of the semester are spent completing assignments appropriate to the internship experience. The student must supply transportation to and from the job site. Interested students should apply through the Gifted Program Contact Teacher.
